Here is our optional prompt for the day! Start off by reading Arvind Krishna Mehrotra’s “Lockdown Garden.” Now, try to write a poem of your own that has multiple numbered sections. Attempt to have each section be in dialogue with the others, like a song where a different person sings each verse, giving a different point of view. Set the poem in a specific place that you used to spend a lot of time in, but don’t spend time in anymore.

A SPANISH ENCHANTMENT

It seems so long ago and far 
away:

1
almost a dream,
azure blue skies, 
heat shimmering 
on sands, on roads.

warm sunshine, 
carressing bodies,
the cadence of 
another language 
lips lisp and love.

3 
we drank tinto de 
verano* and sang,
danced the evenings 
away, with joyous 
abandonment.

4 
we embraced another 
culture, lived as if 
when in Rome do 
as the Romans do,
only the country 
was Spain, that 
land that captured 
our hearts and 
gave us enchantment.

we rode Andalucian 
horses along the 
beaches, through 
streams, up hills and 
down again, walking,
cantering, galloping,
breeze in our faces 
together with human 
and horse in perfect 
synchronicity.

we rode in parades,
in the ferias* dressed 
as camperos,* we 
loved those horses 
for their nobility 
and intelligence, 
the way they gave 
you their hearts as 
we gave them ours.

watching the dancers 
of flamenco in the 
summer months, while 
in winter we joined in 
with abandon.

we cooked and ate 
paella, tapas of 
every type, in winter 
we tried hearty 
el estofado* 

9 
sapphire blue skies, 
mountains, valleys,
little white villages, 
red bougainvillea.

It was so long ago and far away but not a dream but wonderful memories.

*el into de verano - summer wine, red wine poured over ice and topped up with Casera, ( not as tart as soda, not as sweet as lemonade.)

*las ferias - the fairs and horse parades celebrated in the summer
months especially in Andalucia. 

*los camperos - peasant folk ( see photo below)

*el estofado - a hearty stew with chicken and/or pork with vegetables and gravy.
