I can escape to another world.
Sitting in a chair, with feet curled,
I can sail a ship - flag unfurled,
All by reading a well-chosen book.
I can be Shakespeare's Puck,
With just a little bit of luck
Mickey or Minnie or Donald Duck.
It just needs a little imagination.
I despise Mr Darcy for his pride.
Pity Jane Eyre for having tried
To please Mr Rochester, who lied.
These stories have me enchanted.
I can take myself off to the moors,
While pacing Wuthering Heights' floors.
Help poor Nellie with her chores,
Watch Heathcliff go mad and die.
It can be the worst of times or the best,
At the Old Curiosity Shop I may rest.
See Little Dorrit put to the test,
Uriah Heap being ever so humble.
James Joyce's Dubliners open my eyes,
While Anne Boleyn tells such lies.
Little women grow up with sighs,
But Good Wives have the best of it.
