We wait with
bated breath to see if
his horse has
won or not.
It determines if Dad goes
out on Saturday.

If he comes
home happy or not.
If he is
so drunk he
forgets he loves our mother
the consequences.

If he stays
in, he is morose.
He let's his
bad luck sour
his character and snaps at
our poor old mother.

She goes to
bed early to be 
out of sight
so he won't
pick a fight with her over
his bad luck betting.

Sometimes when
he is drunk, he hits
her for no
reason that
we know about - we love our
poor mum very much.

We wonder
what she saw in him
when they were
young and free.
Now, he is downright nasty 
when drunk or sober.
