#31stMarch2024 #earlybird
We’ll be back tomorrow with our first daily featured participant and resource, along with a prompt. But for now, and to help out all of you for whom April 1 comes a bit earlier than it does to Na/GloPoWriMo’s secret headquarters (yes, our lair is built into a volcano), here’s an early-bird prompt: Pick a word from the list below. Then write a poem titled either “A [your word]” or “The [your word]” in which you explore the meaning of the word, or some memory you have of it, as if you were writing an illustrative/alternative definition.
- Cage
- Ocean
- Time
- Cedar
- Window
- Sword
- Flute
Happy writing!
The Cage - A Prose Poem
The cage contains two fighters
bare knuckles, no Marquis of
Queensbury rules here. Just
sweat, spit, blood, and the
battering of body on body.
There is no escape, the cage
contains them, door locked.
The crowd bay for blood to
be spilt, they have money on
the outcome. The crowd is
mainly men, but there are
partisan women there too
screaming and shouting for
their men to win.
The tension mounts as one man falls tohis knees, the other does notfinish him off, but bides his
time. He has his orders, the
Boss wants a big show, and
he always does what the Boss
says. The other fighter staggers
to his feet, his blue eyes hard
in the uncertain light.
He snarls at his opponent and goes in hard, the other, waiting for him, steps aside and blue eyes crashes
into the side of the cage, the
metal tears at his lip and he tastes
blood. He spits it out. The crowd
sensing defeat clamour at the
other side of the cage.
The Boss' man goes in with a hard uppercut to blue eyes' jaw. Several more punches to his face make him stagger backwards; the Boss' man pursues him and gives him two hard punches to his stomach,
it takes all the air from his lungs
and he crashes to the floor.
Blue eyes is counted out unconscious. The Boss' man is declared the winner and the crowd explodes with noise. Soon the adrenaline will die and pain will set in. Blue eyes had got some good hard punches in but in the end it had not been enough. The door is
unlocked and he walks the gauntlet of happy and miserable
faces and soaks up the cheers. This was a good cage fight and he had won.
