#NaPoWriMo

Here’s our prompt for the day – optional, as always. Today, we’d like to challenge you to write a surreal prose poem. For inspiration, check out Franz Kafka’s collection of short parables (my favorite is “The Green Dragon”).

Happy writing!
PERIPHERAL VISION - A Prose Poem

She felt she was being watched.
The feeling had been with her for days. Almost catching some movement in her peripheral vision, almost. It made her feel jumpy, jittery with nerves stretched to their limit.

She shook her head as if to rid herself of the feeling. She finished putting her clothes in the washing machine and closed the door with a bang. Then she sat at her desk and opened her laptop. She gasped in surprise and shock. She couldn't move from her chair.

All around her as if by some weird magic, flowers were appearing, buds at first, then flowers bursting with stars. Stars of every colour like silent fireworks seemed to be coming from her laptop and exploding noiselessly around her.

She stared in wonder as the whole room became a night sky with twinkling universes and planets she recognised, and some she didn't. There it was again, that swift movement and suddenly, 'it' appeared. It was luminous and shining with eyes as black as coal.

Then it morphed into the universal idea of an alien. White body and huge black eyes. They stared at each other for what seemed like an age but was only a minute. Then in a clear female voice with an American accent, it told her not to be afraid.

Strangely enough, she felt a feeling of peace steal over her and her tense body relaxed. She smiled at the apparition and it or she smiled back. They looked at each other, each curious in their own way.
"What took you so long?" She finally asked the alien.
