And now for our optional prompt. If you’ve been paying attention to pop-music news over the past couple of weeks, you may know that Taylor Swift has released a new double album titled “The Tortured Poets Department.” In recognition of this occasion, Merriam-Webster put together a list of ten words from Taylor Swift songs. We hope you don’t find this too torturous yourself, but we’d like to challenge you to select one these words, and write a poem that uses the word as its title.
Happy writing!

THE MACHIAVELLIAN NARCISSIST
He was Machiavellian; I loved him,
and hated him.
He saw sneers where there were
none; heard slights,
When none were intended, played
both victim and aggressor.
He was a narcissist, wrapped up
in the problems of his life.
He was a control freak and ruled
his home domain ruthlessly.
The father of my children, was
Machivellian and cruel.
When I met him, he was charming,
loving and reassuring.
I fell in love with him, realising
now, he couldn't love anyone,
Not even himself: he made a good
pretence at it, but failed.
He isolated me, controlled every
aspect of our lives, often
Angry at life, he resorted to slaps,
progressed to kicks and then
Punches, he made me afraid, so
I found courage and left.
The worst part was not the pain of
physical violence but the
Coercive control, I learned a lot
from my ex, now I am free!
