Oldham Secret Writers' Hangout can be found taking place on the first Friday of the month from 9 am - 5 pm at Unit 45, Mill 2, 1853 Studios, Osborne Mill, Waddington Street, Oldham OL9 6QQ.
I went to the inaugural event, which was £10 for the whole 9 to 5, with tea, coffee and free Wi-Fi included. Run by Geli Berg, she manages to create a welcoming atmosphere in a light and airy studio environment with beautiful views from the windows.
Geli Berg, is a storyteller, poet, singer/songwriter and DJ of World Dance Music and of Peruvian/English heritage. This month's theme was creating characters and we discussed various ways of creating them before creating a character called 'Dylan' inspired by my morning of coping with the vagaries of having a new bathroom fitted!
The day is designed with writing to prompts, listening to stories and time to just write. It had a lovely, positive vibe and the views were inspiring. Geli has an authentic and organic way of working which allowed each particpant to produce their own work which could be shared with the group.
I would recommend the Hangout to any writer who needs a new challenge and a different space to write in. Definitely worth the £10 fee.
