I went to the Khushi Festival on Saturday, 3rd August 2024, because I had booked a free ticket for the Sari Social.
There, I met the friendly and welcoming host, Daksha Mistry, who asked me to pick a sari from a plethora of beautiful saris laid out on many tables. It was a tough decision to make but I finally chose a turquoise with a lovely pattern, edged in pink. (To match my hair!)
Daksha found an underskirt to fit me and whisked me behind a screen so I could slip it on. It tied at the waist and was what the six yards of sari would be folded and tucked into. Daksha put me at my ease and was very deft at pleating the material and tucking it in. Then the sari is thrown over the shoulder and discreetly pinned to my top and then left to flow down my back.
While she worked Daksha told me all about her new business, MY MASALA GURU which can be viewed at:
http://www.mymasala.guru
She described her jars of concentrate paste which come in four varieties and make up to 30 meals per jar. The delicious sounding flavours are; Traditional, Green Masala, Tandoori and Seafood. She had set some lovely gift boxes of all four, set out together with the individual jars which were for sale.
I bought a gift box for my friend's 70th Birthday. Daksha included a gift bag too.
Daksha's lovely, cheerful assistant took pictures of us and Daksha even made a little video of me parading about in the sari. She kindly put it on WhatsApp so I was able to download it.
When I changed back into my own clothes, I overheard Daksha telling some other women who had arrived that as all the saris had been donated she was raising money for charity and was looking for a donation of £20 each, which I was happy to give to own this lovely sari.
The three charities, closest to Daksha's heart are; Meningitis Now, Dementia UK, and Dr. Kershaw's Hospice. In 2023, Daksha raised £15,450 for these charities.
I was very impressed by Daksha Mistry, a wife, mother, new grandmother, charity fund-raiser and now a masala guru entrepeneur! I wish her every success in her new business.
As for the rest of the Khushi Festival, I really enjoyed, the Mehindi hand painting, which a lovely young lady did for me. A lovely hot latte from the Brew Box in the Library's foyer, where I sat and watched a fantastic band of drummers and a beautiful young dancer whose short performance wowed her audience.
