✈️Free Verse (47)✈️ – A Mother’s Love

[ In loving memory of my younger son, Evan K.P. Crossley, 18/10/76 – 29/10/98, Forever Twenty-Two.]

A mother's love has a beginning but no ending.
Even after death, it goes on exchanging love,
For a deep-seated grief that seeps into the psyche,
Feeding the unfairness of it all, why did he die
Before me? it is not in the right order of life.
He fought his demons but just couldn't win.
Nothing he tried worked, I tried everything
I knew and more I researched, but all was in vain.
A mother's love has a beginning but no ending.

Evan died of a heroin overdose, aged only
Twenty-two, the date like his birthday etched
In my mind, bound by this memory, October
Is a bittersweet month, it contains his birth
And death, I still shed a few tears, but I know
He is free from pain and relentless angst that
Stalked his living days and nights, heroin
Is not a kind mistress, she destroys from the
Inside out, until the longing for death overwhelms.
I keep Evan's memory, cherished and alive,
Deep within my heart, knowing that my death,
Will bring a blessed reunion of a beloved son.
A mother's love has a beginning but no ending.
