Raw and Seminal

Raw and seminal, at times full of love for women, at other times-full of loathing ( Lileth as She-devil) David Meltzer drags us through his Jewish heritage by the hair.

His poetry is like a fast running river that has overflowed its banks and is dragging everything into his poetry kicking and screaming.

There is savagery in his words and I did wonder if he was a misogynist with his depictions of the Goddess Lileth, Adam's so called first wife. His diving into Kabbalistic teachings brought him to a very different place than mine had me.

No matter, his poetry caught me off guard, made me want to argue against it. His depiction of his Jewish Heritage which ranged from the gas chambers of Auschwitz to the Brooklyn of his childhood, left me breathless with rage.

This was not a comfortable read and yet it informed, repulsed and entertained me in equal measure. I was relieved when I came to the end of it and then I wanted to go back and read individual poems, again and again, to further understand them, to wring out every last drop of poetry in them, particularly, Bolero, ah, yes, back to Bolero again and again. O Maurice!,
