I have read Manda Scott's Boudicca series of 4 books and absolutely loved them.
I have to say "A Treachery of Spies" is in a league of its own. The story passes seamlessly from what starts out as a murder investigation in France in 2018 to becoming about the network of spies
that operated in occupied France in World War 2.
Manda Scott's characters have a depth and tone that allow them to live in your imagination. It is a complcated story of love, loss, complicity and the treachery of the title. There is the loyalty that the Marquis (French Resistance) inspired. While the description of torture is not laboured but visceral enough to make you gulp with horror.
The threads of the story are masterfully woven together and require concentration but you are rewarded with an excellent story of fiction that has been really well researched and created.
This story inspired me to look into Operation Paperclip, where Nazi scientists and others were allowed to go to America and work and make money, living the American dream while going unpunished for their war crimes.
An excellenty written book which will stay with you long after you have read the last page.
☆☆☆☆☆ Highly recommended reading.
