Last night (Friday 24th January) was Commonword's first Oldham Jam Night at Tammie's on Union Street ( opposite the Link Centre). I invited my friend to join me, and we both braved the cold, inhospitable night to go.
What a treat was in store for us. There were four poets and three musicians. Ella did her usual well crafted introductions, and the evening started with the lovely and incredibly talented poet, Shak Mill. I have been a fan of Shak's poetry for quite a while now, and I just love his delivery style. He has a fantastic memory for his own work. Although I loved his serious pieces, his chicken poem made me laugh out loud.
Next up was the vibrant Dada, who presents an almost musical style to her poetry, I particularly loved her "cost of living" poem.
Next was the lovely Maya who was returning to singing after a break due to ill health. She has a lovely, rich, toned voice, and although there were a couple of technical hitches, the audience cheered her on.
At the break we were treated to some lovely Nigerian food which my friend and I sampled for he first time and thoroghly enjoyed.
The second half started off with Louise Mechen, who read from her book and also gave us some poems from her up and coming audio book project, which she and Shak are collaborating on. Watch this space! Louise has a natural style of delivery, and I partiularly enjoyed her childhood poem.
Next up was Natasha Tingle, I have seen her perform before and always enjoy her poetry, which is written from deep within her psyche. Natasha always looks beautiful and wears some amazing clothes. I bought her latest book ( review to follow) and enjoyed the cadence of her voice.
The second musician of the night was the blues singer, Rowland Jones. His guitar playing was so soulful. He is a singer/songwriter of considerable talent, and I enjoyed his performance very much.
The evening came to its conclusion with 20 year old musician, Naomi Kalu. She is also a singer/songwriter and a talented guitar player. Noami is a powerhouse of singing and writing talent. Every time I see her, she goes from strength to strength. The Sea's A-rising is my favourite song of hers, which she performed last night.
A big thank you to Commonword, Pete Kalu, Ella, and all the staff, also thanks to Tammies for the lovely food.
All in all, it was a satisfying and diverse evening of live music and performance. My friend and I got into our taxi well fed and enlivened by all the live music and spoken word performances.
If you are not in my links, please msg me with the relevant details and I will add you! Thank you to Louise for your card. It makes life so much easier.
