#book #review
I vaguely remember watching the Cadfael series decades ago and looked forward to reading this first book in the series.
Ellis Peters draws her characters very well, and I was soon drawn into the lives of the medieval monks. I liked the fact that there was a hierarchy and Prior Robert and his ambitions for the bones of Saint Winifred to be removed from Wales to Shrewsbury seemed oblivious to the fact that the locals might object.
The following murder was well-plotted, and there were a few twists and turns until the culprit was caught.
Some complain about inaccurate historical facts but I enjoyed the innocence of another time and the worldly Brother Cadfael resolving the crime to everyone's apparent satisfaction.
I am looking forward to reading Book 2.
☆☆☆☆ recommended readiing.
