Prompt April 3rd
And now for our (optional) prompt. The American poet Frank O’Hara was an art critic and friend to numerous painters and poets In New York City in the 1950s and 60s. His poems feature a breezy, funny, conversational style. His poem “Why I Am Not a Painter” is pretty characteristic, with actual dialogue and a playfully offhand tone. Following O’Hara, today we challenge you to write a poem that obliquely explains why you are a poet and not some other kind of artist – or, if you think of yourself as more of a musician or painter (or school bus driver or scuba diver or expert on medieval Maltese banking) – explain why you are that and not something else!
Happy writing!

The Witch In Me
I am a witch, plain and simple.
No, I am neither black nor white,
nor am I an in-between grey.
I am a witch, plain and simple.
I align myself with the seasons
of the year. I am eclectic in
my solitary practice. So no,
I don't belong to a coven.
I don't dance naked in the woods.
Why? you ask, because there are
no woods nearby, and when is it
ever warm enough in the north
of England? I am seventy years
old so I am more dignified in my
practice. Yes, I do cast spells, but
my first edict is to do no harm.
So, no spells compelling people
to do things they don't choose to
do themselves. I am energy, and
I manipulate energy with intention.
I believe in the Divine Feminine
and I follow some Wiccan teachings
but not all. Over the years, I have
picked and chosen various teachings
from Buddism to Sufism to Christianity.
I am unique and make no apology for
that. Witchcraft is a practice, not a
religion. I reject all religions as being
patriarchal with no equal place for me.
In Witchcraft, we are all equal. The
term 'witch' applies to men and women.
"Do we fly on broomsticks?" Don't be
silly, that is a myth. "Do we worship
the devil?" Of course not. We don't believe in the devil that is a Christian belief. I am fulfilled by my craft. It
puts me in my rightful place in the
Universe. It gives me control over my
life. " Do I have a familiar?" I have
two cats who choose to live with me!
