🎶🎨NaPoWriMo – 30 poems in 30 days – April 2025 – No. 16🎨🎶

#NaPoWriMo #2025

Like Kay Ryan’s poem, this one invites us to imagine music in the context of a place, but more along the lines of a soundtrack laid on top of the location, rather than just natural sounds. Today, try writing a poem that similarly imposes a particular song on a place. Describe the interaction between the place and the music using references to a plant and, if possible, incorporate a quotation – bonus points for using a piece of everyday, overheard language.

Happy writing!

BAMBOLEO

Bamboleo, bamboleo, the swaying of the Gypsy Kings.
The flamenco like music washes over an Andalucian morn.
The basil plant keeps insects at bay as the heat rises.
Outside the thick white walls where geckos run
Up and down the wall, passed yellow shutters.
The green wrought iron bars on doors and windows.
A horse that dances in vain.
Because it's so very scorned.
Fabric of life in the countryside,
traditional,
Riding horses in the hills and on the beaches.
Bamboleo, bamboleo, rocking, and swaying
To the staccato in my head, hooves on the sand
Beating and splashing in the waves on the shore
That's why it won't forgive your crying,
Let it go, let it be, release it to the four winds
Bamboleo, bamboleo, I can't find you in abandonment.
Rocking and swaying, rocking, and swaying, I ride away.
