PROMPT

For today’s (optional) prompt. Like our villanelle prompt from a week ago, this prompt plays around with song lyrics, but in a very specific context – singing while riding in a car. Take a look at Ellen Bass’s poem, “You’re the Top.” Now, craft your own poem that recounts an experience of driving/riding and singing, incorporating a song lyric.

Happy writing!

The Drive Home After a Night Out

The road journey drags long into the rainy night.
Sleeping and not sleeping and the state in between.
The wipers swish the rain from the windowscreen,
Only to be replaced by more rain, drumming loudly on the car roof.

We yawn and fidget, longing to be home again.
Alcohol has befuddled our brains, but our designated driver
Is as sharp as a tack, humming under her breath.
So quiet it is almost indiscernable, that soft thrum
Of music, gentle yet insistent humming.

Then, one of us recognises the tune and hums along.
The noise banishing sleep, we are all awake and revived.
Words break out, Mamma Mia, quiet at first,
But then loud and proud, and we are rocking Abba,
Mamma Mia, here I go again, my, my, how can I resist you?

We are reliving the evening's revels, our singing grows loud.
Hand dancing in the car, full of the joy our singing inspires
Words tumble out, remembered lyrics sung with passion
Mamma Mia, here I go again, my, my, how can I resist you?
We can't resist Abba. We sing the rest of the way home!
