#NaPoWriMo #2025

PROMPT
Today we’d like to challenge you to write a poem that recounts an experience of your own in hearing live music and tells how it moves you. It could be a Rolling Stones concert, your little sister’s middle school musical, or just someone whistling – it just needs to be something meaningful to you.

Happy writing!

THE OLDHAM TINKERS

I went with my fiancé to see the Oldham Tinkers Play.
If music was food, it would be 'Tata 'ash,
with dumplings.#
The music links me to my past.

They played upstairs at the Oldham Hotel.
Gloopy enough to 'stick to your ribs' as it was eaten.
The food reminds me of dinner time tales.

The plinking of the banjo, the mandolin's soulful sound
Adding potatoes, onions, carrots, to the minced meat.
Lyrics implanted in my brain

The guitar and then the singing of Oldham's Burning Sands*.
Topped off with suet dumplings floating on the top.
Music entwines with lyrics

Skinny Lizzie, with her quaint Egyptian style, was the harem queen.°
It filled you up, like you'd eaten a  veritable feast.
The two inspire creativity

They sang of mill life and the far-off Dardanelles in Galipoli.
Dessert was creamy rice pudding with the skin on top.
Those words that write my poems

°Lyrics to Oldham Burning Sands were a nod to Wilson, Kepple & Betty, as Oldham has no sands burning or otherwise.°
