MY FEY FRIEND

Before we consigned, my friend, Carol
to the funeral fire,
We sang the beautiful song called "By the Earth."
Sung acapella by Elaine Silver, the words
resounded,
In the crematorium's chapel, clear as a tinkling bell.

The song sings of the Goddess whose body is the earth.
The air we breathe is her breath that we consume for life.
The fire is the Goddess' spark of spirit and passion,
And the living, flowing waters are her sacred womb.

Carol had a pagan heart and a bright, enquiring mind.
Her stories were of her place on the earth, her birthplace,
Where she lived her life with her husband,
And brought up her children, cared for dogs and cats too.

She had a deft writing mind, a feeling for plot and character.
Her words were a rich tapestry of the warp and weft
Of a life lovingly lived; her friendship was a precious gift.
I loved her brightly coloured beads and her warm smile.

I miss our visits to the cafe for food and real friendship.
A place where we put the world to rights,
Only to find it was all wrong again next morning.
She was pragmatic yet still maintained her fey inner life.

"May the peace of the fairies be
Forever in your heart
The circle is open
But unbroken
Merry meet and merry part
And merry meet again"**
