Today, we’d like to challenge you to write a poem that takes its inspiration from the life of a musician, poet, or other artist. And while our example poems are squarely elegiac, don’t feel limited to minor-key feelings in your own work.

The Tragedy of Nirvana's Kurt Cobain
Kurt Cobain, whose name came from
his Irish ancestors,
Took Ritilin for AHD at school.
Sang " Hey Jude" when aged only two.
His early influences were "The Melvins."
His parents' divorce devastated his young life.
He drank alcohol to cope.
He smoked weed, tried cocaine
And methanphetamine and heroin.
Talented songwriter his "Lithium" and "Smells like Teen Spirit"
songs brought him success,
But fame sat uncomfortably on his
shoulders, he became a drug addict.
Courtney Love and he had a daughter together, but things got worse.
He overdosed several times.
Courtney saved his life so many times.
He finally died from a gunshot wound.
Aged only 27, he died too young, the king of Generation X.
He was an extraordinary grunge artist,
who couldn't handle Nirvana's fame.
He shot himself in the head..
