The Magnetism of Oldham
Oldham must have a magnet at its middle.
For it draws me back wherever I go.
From the flatlands of Cambridgeshire,
To the Mountains of Mourne in Northern Ireland.
Back I come like a yo-yo forever drawn to my home.
From the fiestas of Andalucia, in Spain.
To the Valencian coast, and the return to Oldham.
Home tugs at my heartstrings until I can roam no more.
Maybe it's the ley lines that cross on Greaves Street,
Outside Oldham Theatre workshop, that draws me back
Maybe it is family or my family of friends,
Or maybe it is my ancestors' call across the centuries.
Oldham is my home; it's where my roots grow.
Ancestors and descendants cluster, a chain of DNA.
The sandstone grit and peat of the wild moors
That surrounds us, makes this Oldham's unseen magnet.
