The author, Jo Harthan, is a born storyteller, and I was looking forward to this her latest novel.
Jo writes short chapters that had me invested in Jack Stranger's life right away.
Jack was born 24 years to the day after John Lennon's death from a fatal shooting. To say Jack's mother is obsessed by Lennon is putting it mildly. She wants her son, Jack, to grow up as the living, breathing image of Lennon.
On his 18th birthday, she introduces her son to the world of virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI). Jack is hooked, and the John Lennon avatar gets more sentient with each upgrade.
Locked into Lennon's world, Jack finds it hard to differentiate between what is real and what is VR. He becomes obsessed with Lennon's avatar and, with its help, tries to become rich and famous as a writer and musician.
However, his obsession borders on madness, and the author ramps up the tension until the last page.
Jo Harthan always does thorough research for all her novels, and I enjoyed finding out new facts about Lennon. This book shows where VR and AI may lead us and is frightening and fascinating in equal measures.
☆☆☆☆☆ Highly recommended reading.
