I thought I'd find another you.
A kinder, more thoughtful version,
But I never did, I gave up on it,
That part of my life died a death.
Passion's fire, just cold, grey ashes.
No embers to stir gently to flame.
No wildly beating heart at the sight
Of you as we met clandestinely.
No whispered words of love or passion.
The silence of long years apart.
Yet, you still live in my heart.
A warm, easy feeling, peaceful,
With age, wrapped in nostalgia.
A thrum of familiarity, wrapped
In fading memories, shimmering
on the very edges of the abyss.
I think of you now and again.
I have forgiven you, but I hesitate
To let you go, I still want you
To wander those back roads
Of my mind, gentle reminders
Of what might have been, if only.
