📚Book Review📚 – New Grub Street by George Gissing

This is the second of George Gissing's books I have read, and again, I was drawn quickly into the torrid and squalid Victorian literary world where the novel is based.

We have two contrasting characters of Reardon and Milvain. One is a traditional novelist who has had minor success, and the other is engaged in the new breed of journalism.

Gissing contrasts their lives and attitudes well. Reardon is sadly doomed to poverty and failure while Milvain hustles his way to his dream goal of the editorship of a journal.

It is interesting to note that the literary problems of the 19th century are still going on today.

Gissing pulls no punches with his descriptions of abject poverty. His characters are really brought to life with his powers of descriptive prose. I believe this is also quite autobiographical too.

☆☆☆☆☆ Highly recommended reading.
