Isabel Allende was born in Peru in 1942, brought up in Chile, and now lives in California in the USA. She is a novelist, feminist and philanthropist, and her books have sold more than seventy-four million copies in forty-two different languages.
She has written twenty-six novels, and this is the fourth novel of hers I have read. Introduced to Allende via Eva Luna and the Stories of Eva Luna, which I read in Spanish. Her novel about the tragic death of her daughter, Paula, made me cry.
This book, The Soul of a Woman, reveals more of Isabel Allende's story. She draws you into her story and her mother's story very quickly. Being a feminist in Chile shows what a resilient character she has. Her writing style is frank yet intimate, and I found myself agreeing with her ideas and beliefs.
Although women have come a long way on their feminist journey, we still have a long way to go. She exhorts her children and grandchildren, both female and male, to continue the fight for the rights of ALL WOMEN, not just the privileged few in the West.
I really enjoyed this no-nonsense approach to what, for many, has become a jaded subject. Isabel Allende writes with passion and inspiration and ignites the flame of feminist values once more.
☆☆☆☆☆ Highly recommended reading.
