NaPoWriMo – Day 22

Family – A Villanelle

I discovered a family I had forgotten I belonged to.

Ex-forces, a veteran, I was still one of this particular gang.

Like stepping back in time, with banter and special comradeship too.

It was like being welcomed home, with nothing to do,

but join in, which I did without a bittersweet pang.

I had discovered a family I had forgotten I belonged to.

I had felt adrift, unconnected, abandoned without a clue.

Family gone from death, betrayal and a door-slamming bang.

Like stepping back in time, with banter and special comradeship too.

An adult orphan, parents deceased, I needed something new.

To stop the old, coming back like a boomerang.

I had discovered a family that I had forgotten I belonged to.

Now in the Corona crisis, I have found a new crew.

One brought cat food, the others did my shopping then they rang.

Like stepping back in time, with banter and special comradeship too.

Now, I am in lockdown, I look at my life without a rose-tinted view.

We meet on Zoom, and from this, real friendship sprang.

I discovered a family I did not know I belonged to.

Like stepping back in time, with banter and special comradeship too.
