Endings and beginnings 
one follows the other 
as day follows night.

The end of a year 
beset with war, famine,
high temperatures. 

That brought death 
due to climate change 
and freezing cold.

That also brought 
death; death of loved 
ones from disease.

Covid, 'flu and cancer 
2022 was not a good year;
we transition into 2023.

We clutch hope tightly,
as food and energy prices 
rise ever more steeply.

Will this be a good year 
or will it be more of the same?
We can only hope and pray.

We can be kind to each 
other, listen to our young people 
and open our hearts to love.
