And now, here’s this year’s final (optional) prompt. In his poem, “Angels,” Russell Edson speaks of these spiritual warrior-messenger-guardians as if they were a type of endangered animal. Brief as it is, the poem is disorienting in its use of flattened diction, odd similes, and elliptical statements. Today, try writing your own poem that discusses a real or mythical being or profession (demons, firefighters, demonic firefighters) with the same sort of musing yet dispassionate tone.
Happy writing!
I couldn't end on a dispassionate note, so I have veered a little off prompt with this last poem for NaPoWriMo, 2026.
THE LIGHT BRINGERS
In the past we have been written about
in words, stories, myths and legends.
Yet we still live on as ordinary people.
We are the light bringers and we bring
light into the darkest corners of the
world, to bring comfort where we can.
No governments govern us or even
know about us or we would be health
and safety'd out of existence.
We are inspired by the sun, but our light
illuminates lamps, creates the spark
of electricity and the candle's flame.
We are elemental with fire but grounded
in earth, fluid in air, transformed by water and spiritual in the swirl of ether.
We bring our energy to the universe and
with that connection we reach out to
all humans in their pain and sorrow.
With our words, we endeavour to bring
comfort in the chaos of war and death.
We write and speak our authentic truth.
What is a woman or man to do with life?
Only to try and make it better for those
that come after us – to leave a legacy.
So we shine our light, even when it
grows dim in the cess pool that can be
our lives today – we lift ourselves up.
We inspire hope in the hopeless, we
change the world with acts of kindness,
We reach out to every sister and brother.
We are the poets who use our words so
full of the passion of our energetic field
to inform, to warn, to comfort and care.
We may well be an endangered species
but we won't go down without a fight,
to save our beautiful planet's future.
Light bringers are warriors of light!
When we die, as we must, we will leave
our words, our memories, and our light.
