He never did look back,
Heartbeat, pulse, blood.
Come with me the wind
whispered "you haven't
been yourself." She lay in
the soft bed looking out
at the night, "let's not make
a fuss," she sighed gently.
Later that day a marvelous
air of quiet descended on
that old stone built house.
This was usually the moment,
She thinks the ghosts have been
trying to warn her,Ā that war
involved far more waiting
than shooting atĀ poor people.
"There are ways to serve the
cause of liberty that don't
involve bloodshed," she sighed.
"Because I have seen dead
men up close," he shivered at
the memories; "you have to
keep your head down and your
wits about you in order to live."
"But there were still so many
rules, and so much death.
There is nothing quick in army
life except retreats," he was
back there, where she could
not follow. That stopped her
in her tracks, like a salmon,¹
swimming against the current.
