Who are the people living in the dark?
They never draw their curtains back,
or lift the closed slats of their blinds.
Are the lights constantly blazing?
Eating up their precious electricity.
What are they closing out or keeping in?
Are they introverts or perhaps hermits?
Why don't they want the light to shine
in through their windows; are they
hoarders or keeping darker secrets?
Are there bodies buried out of sight?
Is there mental torment that cannot
abide a ray of sunlight to shine inside?
They send out for food deliveries, Uber
taxis with crates of supermarket beer.
Has life just become too much to bear?
That alcoholism is preferable to what
we accept as daily life? Work, shopping,
going out with friends, paying bills,
the daily war news and all that despair.
Do they live as keyboard warriors,
conspiracy theorists, or play violent
games? Shutting themselves off from
the reality of life; replacing it with
memes and artificial intelligence?
Just open the curtains a crack and let
the light shine in. Rumi wrote that's
what cracks are for. Wave at anyone
passing by. Open the window - just
say hello, just come back to the world!
