Leonard Cohen: The Mystical Roots of Genius by Harry Freedman is an excellent, well researched biography. It tells his life story whilst delving deeper into his religion and spirituality which he incorporates into his poetry and song lyrics.
The author includes assessments of Cohen's deep, meaningful song lyrics in detail. He includes Cohen's own interpretations too.
Cohen was born a Jew and studied the religion, the bible and the holy Jewish books too. He also included a lot of Christian tropes in his writing. He spent many years studying Zen Buddism and even became a monk.
He felt that sexual union was a sacred act and was influenced by 1960's drug culture.
The author gives the impression that Cohen was hard to pin down and categorise but he has managed to produce a balanced and informative biography.
âââââHighly recommended reading.
