Now for our (optional) prompt! Jaswinder Bolina’s poem “Mood Ring” imagines the speaker as both himself and an interior being (who happens to take the form of a small donkey). It’s quite silly . . . and not silly at the same time. A sort of “serious fun.” Today, we’d like to challenge you to write your own poem in which the speaker is in dialogue with him or herself.
Happy writing!
TALKING TO MYSELF
In my head live many voices.
They help me make my choices.
Or hinder and confuse me into
procrastination; they make me blue.
They speak when I want to sleep.
They criticise and make me weep
with frustration when I can't decide
what to do; they take me on a ride.
Where I weigh up the dos and don'ts
And agonise over the wills and wont's.
Decision making is so difficult to do,
when your mind has such a full retinue!
Doom and gloom – the brothers grim.
Hope and faith with their lovely hymn.
Rhyme and reason counsel self-care.
Mr Reckless who will always dare.
There is fear who lurks out of view
churning up thoughts into a dark stew.
Indecision with her will I, won't I
questions that make me visibly sigh.
I need an off button to switch them off.
A list of pros and cons - no one to scoff.
I'd toss a coin, choose heads or tails?
Decision made, keeps me on the rails.
So with a vibrating 'Om' I meditate.
Something the voices really hate.
That and sleep when I finally gain,
inner peace, where I'd like to remain.
